SAN BERNARDINO — The wreckage of a plane missing since shortly after its takeoff from John Wayne Airport on Friday afternoon was found Sunday by the crew aboard a San Bernardino County sheriff’s helicopter, authorities said. The pilot was believed killed in the crash.
The Beach Baron aircraft piloted by John Kirsch, 49, of Carson City, Nev., disappeared from the Ontario Airport radar at 4:40 p.m. Friday, according to the Civil Air Patrol’s California wing.
Kirsch, flying alone, had taken off 40 minutes earlier, authorities said. The wreckage was spotted about 2:20 p.m. Sunday, said Civil Air Patrol Col. Hank Covington.
