American Stores Co.: The grocery store retailer said fourth-quarter profit totaled $86.03 million, up 62% from the same period a year ago. Sales totaled $5.7 billion, down 7%. The fourth-quarter 1989 figures included 14 weeks, while the 1990 results were for a 13-week quarter. For the year, profit rose 54% to $182.4 million on sales of $22.2 billion, up slightly. Among other chains, the Salt Lake City-based retailer owns Lucky, Alpha Beta and Skaggs.
