THREE-DAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE : ‘Lambs’ Still Making Noise

Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs” held onto its No. 1 spot in the weekend box office standings, despite the opening of Oliver Stone’s highly-anticipated Jim Morrison rock bio “The Doors.” Over its third weekend, “Silence” took in $10.6 million to “The Doors’ ” $9.1 million, but “The Doors” had the highest per-screen average of any film in wide release. Elsewhere: after 16 weeks in the Top 5, Orion’s “Dances With Wolves” dropped to sixth with receipts of $3.9 million. (It’s cumulative total to date: $122.6 million.) And Touchstone Pictures’ “Scenes from a Mall,” which opened in sixth place last week, plummeted to ninth with grosses of $2.1 million.
* Disney’s “Shipwrecked,” about a 14-year-old boy battling pirates on the high seas, opened with $3.9 million, to carry off seventh place.
