The Toronto Maple Leafs kept their faint playoff hopes alive with a 7-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils Wednesday night at Toronto.

Vince Damphousse and Mike Krushelnyski each scored two goals, and Dave Hannan, Dave Ellett and Dan Marois added one each for the Maple Leafs, who are 11 points behind Minnesota for the fourth and final playoff berth in the Norris Division.

Brendan Shanahan, Peter Stastny and Kirk Muller scored for the Devils, who outshot Toronto, 45-23.

Vancouver 4, Pittsburgh 3--Canuck goalie Bob Mason made his first NHL start in a year and stopped 35 shots as a replacement for injured Troy Gamble and Kirk McLean at Vancouver.

Gerald Diduck scored the deciding goal at 13:56 of the second period, breaking a 3-3 tie.

The Penguins’ Mario Lemieux was assessed a 10-minute misconduct in the third period after arguing with referee Ron Hoggarth. Lemieux assisted on one goal.

The game was delayed 10 minutes early in the opening period when a shot by Dan Quinn shattered the glass behind the Pittsburgh goal. After repairs were completed, Quinn scored on the power play, his 10th goal in 12 games.

Washington 4, N.Y. Rangers 4--Kris King scored at 8:39 of the third period to cap a gamelong comeback as the Rangers rallied for the tie at New York.

The Capitals took a 4-3 lead at 6:45 of the final period when Dale Hunter got his stick in the way of John Vanbiesbrouck’s clearing pass and chipped the puck into an unguarded net.

Detroit 5, Montreal 3--The Red Wings were behind, 2-1, after one period, but they scored four consecutive goals in the second period to take command at Detroit.

Brent Fedyk and Sergei Fedorov each had two goals and an assist for the Red Wings, who kept the Canadiens winless in six games.

Fedorov started the rally at 6:52, scoring a short-handed goal by tapping in a rebound after Andre Racicot failed to handle a long Fedyk slap shot.

Fedorov then gave Detroit the lead at 11:54, when he put a wrist shot past Racicot on the power play for his 30th goal.

Fedyk finished the period with a pair of goals 50 seconds apart.

Calgary 4, Edmonton 2--Goaltender Mike Vernon allowed goals on the first two shots he faced, then came back to block 34 shots for the Flames at Calgary.
