TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl Can’t Complain After a Clean Victory Over Stich

With two tournament victories in the past two weeks, Ivan Lendl said he could find nothing to complain about Sunday after beating Michael Stich, 7-5, 6-3, to win the $750,000 Volvo Indoor at Memphis, Tenn.

“I’m very pleased. I hit the ball nice and clean. I didn’t give him any free points and I made a lot of big shots when I needed them,” said Lendl, seeded first in the tournament and ranked third in the world. It was his 90th tournament title.

Lendl controlled Stich with precision groundstrokes and a powerful serve when needed as he dispatched him in 90 minutes to pick up the $99,000 winner’s check.

Stefan Edberg won his first title of the year and bolstered his No. 1 ranking with a four-set victory over fellow Swede Jonas Svensson in the Eurocard Classics tournament at Stuttgart, Germany.

Edberg, who won, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, broke Svensson’s serve three times as took the first set in less than 30 minutes. He had trouble with his own serve in the second set and trailed, 5-4, in the third. But Edberg broke for 5-5 and the match turned in his favor. The victory was worth $137,000.

Top-seeded Jana Novotna won her fifth career singles championship by coming to the net in the final two sets to defeat fifth-seeded Anne Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at the $150,000 Virginia Slims event at Oklahoma City.

UCLA’s Mark Knowles rallied in the No. 2 singles to defeat USC’s Donny Isaak, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, as the Bruins defeated the Trojans, 5-2, in the USTA/ITCA Men’s National Indoor Team Championship at Louisville, Ky.

UCLA is 14-0 and will be No. 1 when the next national rankings come out. USC fell to 9-1.
