San Pedro Girls Play Chatsworth for City Soccer Title

A season that began in tragedy could end in celebration Saturday when the San Pedro High girls’ soccer team meets Chatsworth at noon in the L.A. City Section championship game at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.
San Pedro dedicated its season to the memory of Coach Steve Morris, who collapsed and died Oct. 10 after running laps with the team. Morris, a San Pedro science teacher, started the girls’ soccer program three years ago.
Morris’ daughter, Stephanie, plays on the team.
Chuck Hawksford, Morris’ replacement, had limited experience as a soccer coach, but has guided the Pirates to 20-2 record. They avenged one of their losses Wednesday with a 1-0 semifinal victory over El Camino Real at Angels Gate Park in San Pedro.
Forward Tammy Bowlin scored the game’s only goal in the 37th minute on a pass from Melissa Elgin.
Chatsworth advanced to the final with a 1-0 victory over Birmingham.
