COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nye, Walker Lead Hit Parade in Saddleback’s 15-5 Victory

Saddleback had 21 hits, including five by Rob Nye and four by Brian Walker, in defeating Los Angeles Pierce, 15-5, in a community college baseball game Tuesday in Mission Viejo.

Nye also scored five runs and drove in three more. He had a bases-empty home run in the first inning. Walker had four RBIs and hit a two-run home run in the sixth for Saddleback (5-5), which scored five runs in the third to take a 7-1 lead and added four in the fifth to make it 12-3.

Starter Corey Giuliano (1-1) pitched five innings for the victory. L.A. Pierce is 6-4.

In other nonconference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 25, MiraCosta 2--Octavio Medina set a Rancho Santiago single-game record for hits with six, including a home run that sparked a seven-run fourth inning for the visiting Dons (16-3). Medina also drove in four runs and Rancho Santiago scored nine runs in the first inning.

Medina’s six hits surpasses six other Rancho Santiago players, including Bob Hamelin, Ruben Gonzalez, Bob Brucato and Vince Shinholster, who each had five in a game.

Rancho Santiago had defeated MiraCosta, 24-2, Feb. 12 at Rancho Santiago.

Golden West 10, Palomar 9 (10 innings)--Golden West (4-5) trailed, 7-2, after three innings but rallied for the victory at Palomar. Golden West won it on an RBI single in the 10th by Rob Walker to score Jason White, who had walked to open the inning. Steve Rath had an RBI double in the ninth to force the game into extra innings.

Gerad Cawhorn, the Orange Empire Conference’s most valuable player last season, had two hits, including a home run, for Golden West.

In nonconference softball:

Cypress 2, El Camino 0--Laura Corson (2-0) pitched a three-hitter and Tricia Barr had two hits for Cypress (2-1).
