Santa Margarita 61, St. Paul 54--Santa Margarita center Jeff Layne scored 22 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead the Eagles. Santa Margarita (16-9) advances to the quarterfinal game for the second consecutive year, meeting La Canada Friday.
After the 6-8 Layne scored six quick points, St. Paul (14-13) began swarming the post on defense. The tactics left Mike Carpenter open outside, and he responded by scoring 13 of his 15 points in the second half.
Carpenter added nine points in the third quarter to help Santa Margarita overcome a 35-28 deficit.
