Pomona 74, Trabuco Hills 50--After leading by one point at the half, Pomona switched to a trapping 1-3-1 defense that forced 12 third-quarter turnovers. The Devils outscored Trabuco Hills, 27-6, in the period, to advance to the quarterfinals to play Centennial, which beat Lompoc.
“Of all the seeded teams, we wanted to face them,” Trabuco Hills Coach Rainer Wulf said. “We knew we were better than our record and we felt if we kept the game at a slower pace, we had a chance.
“We played well for a half, but we didn’t handle their pressure in the third quarter,” Wulf said.
Brett Poulos, Trabuco Hills’ 5-foot-4 guard, kept the Mustangs close with three three-pointers in the second quarter, finishing with a team-high 16 points and four three-pointers.
After the teams traded baskets to open the second half, Pomona outscored Trabuco Hills, 19-0, over a four-minute span, turning a 31-30 lead into a 50-30 lead with 3:02 to play in the quarter.
