THAILAND: Foreign investor interest in Thailand--the country many refer to as Asia’s “Fifth Tigerâ€--is beginning to cool after years of robust growth. Foreign investment applications dropped 25.7% in 1990 from the previous year, while operating permits granted to foreigners declined 18%, the government Board of Investment reported. Both represented the second yearly decline in a row. Taiwan posted the biggest drop in new applications--36.7%--followed by Hong Kong’s 28.3%, Japan’s 14.5% and the United States’ 5.2%. But the value of actual investments made in 1990 increased by 14.5%, or $15.5 billion.
