First baseman Mark McGwire and the Oakland Athletics, who were scheduled for salary arbitration, agreed to a one-year, $2.85-million contract before the hearing. McGwire, 27, the American League rookie of the year in 1987, made $1,545,000 in 1990. He had asked for $3.3 million in arbitration, and the A’s had offered $2 million.
