No. 10 Helix was nearly upset by Monte Vista, but because of some clutch free-throw shooting by Brandon Sanders, the Highlanders pulled out a 44-42 overtime victory.
Monte Vista had a two-point lead, 40-38, with 10 seconds left and a chance to go up by more, but the front-end of a one-and-one was missed.
Helix hurried the ball down court and got it to Sanders, who penetrated the lane and drew a foul. He sank both free throws to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Sanders accounted for all of Helix’s points by adding four more free throws.
Overall, Sanders was seven of eight from the line and finished with nine points.
Helix improved to 18-5, 8-0 and Monte Vista fell to 16-9, 5-3.
