AIRLINES : Airbus Firm Expects Sales Drop

PARIS — European consortium Airbus Industrie said today that airliner orders will probably fall sharply this year, with the downturn stemming from the cyclical nature of its business rather than any effect of the Persian Gulf War.
Airbus expects orders for about 170 aircraft, down from 404 in 1990, a spokesman said. “We knew from the 421 that we had in 1989 and the 404 in 1990 that those were exceptional years . . . ,” he said. “Ordering is cyclical in our business.”
Airbus is a consortium made up of Aerospatiale of France, Daimler-Benz AG’s Deutsche Airbus unit in Germany, British Aerospace PLC and CASA of Spain.
