GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Granger Gets 21 Rebounds as Valencia Routs Anaheim
Allison Granger’s 18 points and 21 rebounds helped Valencia High School overwhelm Anaheim, 73-21, in an Orange League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Anaheim.
Heather Kidd scored 13 points and Sommer McLane had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Valencia (16-7, 7-1 in league). Trina DeSylvia scored eight points, including two three-pointers, for Anaheim.
In other Orange League games:
Brea-Olinda 69, Magnolia 35--Jinelle Williams scored 20 points and Jody Anton scored 15 for host Brea-Olinda (21-1, 8-0). Sarah Beckley added 11 points for Brea-Olinda. Joyce Pe’a scored 12 points for Magnolia.
Savanna 56, Western 41--Playing without 6-foot center Sara Works, who sprained her ankle Tuesday in a game with Magnolia, Savanna tied its school record for victories in a season with two games remaining in the regular season. Savanna went 18-9 in the 1988-89 season.
Carrie Frederick had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Wendy Castro had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Stacey Aliff had 11 points for the visiting Rebels (18-4, 5-3).
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 62, Santa Margarita 30--Mellissa McDonald scored 18 points, Shiela Manio scored 11 and Rose Imbriano scored 10 for host Mater Dei (10-9, 5-1).
Rosary 49, Bishop Amat 45--Carlyn Chey scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had seven steals and Tricia Kay scored eight points and handed out five assists for visiting Rosary (10-7, 4-3).
In the Century League:
El Modena 49, Villa Park 34--Myhanh Nguyen had 10 points and eight assists and Melizza Benitez had seven points and 14 rebounds for El Modena (13-4, 7-1). El Modena led by 10 points for most of the game at Villa Park. Mickey Trollinger had eight points for host Villa Park (5-12, 2-6).
Foothill 49, Santa Ana Valley 33--Tracy Thomas scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 60, Los Alamitos 55--Briana Yoshina had 18 points, five steals and five assists for host El Dorado (9-11, 4-4), which never led by fewer than three points in the fourth quarter. Erin Vessey added six points and 29 rebounds, Angie Conley had 12 and Miryka Tonjes had 11 for El Dorado. Cindy Yamasaki had 14 points and Tricia Yamasaki and Rachel Gilsoff each had 12 points for Los Alamitos (0-8 in league).
Loara 54, Esperanza 53--Tracy Titus scored from inside the key with 14 seconds left and Loara held. Loara (12-10, 5-3) trailed by 12 points in the second quarter but Rebecca Stevens, who scored 16 points, and Miyuki Shiba, who had four points and six assists, led a comeback as Loara went to an effective full-court press. Titus scored 24 points.
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 50, Pacifica 34--Melanie Dear scored 14 points for visiting Garden Grove (7-12, 3-8). Erin Asari had 17 points for Pacifica (8-9, 5-6).
In the Olympic League:
Valley Christian 43, Capistrano Valley Christian 40--Amy Pollema scored 13 points for Valley Christian. Heidi Elliot and Jennifer Smith each scored 11 points and Elliot grabbed 12 rebounds for host Capistrano Valley Christian (13-6, 5-5).
Ontario Christian 44, Orange Lutheran 31--Renee Wright scored eight points for visiting Orange Lutheran (7-8, 5-4).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Estancia 65, Laguna Hills 15--Melody Earle scored 17 points and Patrice Lumpkin had 16 for Estancia (21-1, 8-0), the second-ranked team in Orange County. Monique Sweet and Leah Braatz each had 13 for Estancia. Braatz also had 14 rebounds. The Eagles led, 30-8, at the half and shut out Laguna Hills (5-12, 3-5) in the third quarter.
Trabuco Hills 52, Laguna Beach 36--Shelley Calhoun scored 18 points and Holly Warnick scored 10 points for visiting Trabuco Hills (11-12, 5-3). Laurie Rush had 17 points and Cole Stephens had 13 for Laguna Beach (3-14, 1-7).
Costa Mesa 59, Century 32--Costa Mesa went on a 31-0 run that spanned three quarters and doomed Century. Olivia DiCamilli had 18 points for host Costa Mesa (16-7, 7-1). Lucy Guerrero had 12 and Yessenia Cota had 11 for Century (0-8 in league).
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 58, Saddleback 45--Michaela Ross had 19 points and 15 rebounds for host Newport Harbor (10-10, 3-4). Maureen McLaren and Kristi Izumita each had 12 points for the Sailors.The score was tied, 12-12, after one quarter but Newport Harbor pulled away.
Woodbridge 55, University 47--Woodbridge led, 36-33, after three quarters but University never got closer. Nicole Quinn had 13 points and nine rebounds and Heather McPherson and Deanna Harry each had 11 points for visiting Woodbridge (18-4, 6-1). Christy Loud had 15 points for University.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 67, Irvine 22--Adara Newidouski scored 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, handed out six assists and had six steals, Lizzette Zamora scored two points and had eight assists and Karun Grossman scored 10 points for visiting Dana Hills (12-8, 3-4). Lorraine Reyes scored 10 for Irvine.
In the Sunset League:
Marina 54, Ocean View 43--Ocean View led by five entering the fourth quarter but Marina outscored the Sea Hawks, 22-6, to pull ahead. Gillian Bean had nine of her 20 points and Colleen Hatch had eight of 14 in the quarter. Bean also had six steals for host Marina (18-4, 9-0). Kristen McClusky had 14 points for Ocean View.
Edison 86, Westminster 47--Erika Miller had 26 of her 34 points in the second half and Talia Crooks had 14 points and 24 rebounds for host Edison (15-8, 5-5). Miller, who made four three-point shots, now has 45 this season.
