Allied warplanes, including U.S. B-52 bombers, pounded an Iraqi armored column of 800 to 1,000 vehicles in southern Kuwait, destroying more than 100 tanks, pool reports said. Iraqi troops crossed into Saudi Arabia both north and west of the abandoned town of Khafji and were engaged by allied forces in tank and artillery duels, the pool reports said. The military command in Riyadh said that allied forces have destroyed 33 Iraqi tanks and 28 armored personnel carriers in fighting in and around Khafji.
The U.S. military command confirmed reports that an AC-130 gunship crashed behind Iraqi lines, and all 14 aboard were reported missing.
The military is investigating whether some of the 11 Marines killed in a battle with Iraq near the Kuwaiti border this week died from friendly fire.
Israeli and Palestinian gunners fought shelling duels in south Lebanon for the fourth straight day in what the local media called a new front in the war.
