Union Vote Withdrawn: The Graphic Communications International Union moved to withdraw its petition with the National Labor Relations Board seeking a vote on union representation of about 800 pressroom employees of the Los Angeles Times. The GCIU filed its petition for an election in October, and the vote had been scheduled for Thursday. William C. Torrence, an international vice president of the union, said he believed that the GCIU could not win the election. EuGene L. Falk, Times executive vice president for administration, said the union’s decision “supports our belief that employees value The Times’ long tradition of dealing directly and informally with its employees, without the need for a third party to act as go-between.â€
