WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Stanford Gets a Scare, Then Beats USC

Stanford, trailing USC, 51-46, with 10 minutes to play, went on a 21-6 run in the next five minutes to take a 67-57 lead and remain unbeaten in Pacific 10 Conference play with a 77-69 victory Saturday over the Trojans at Stanford.

USC scored seven consecutive points but could get no closer than 67-64 with 3:20 left. Ninth-ranked Stanford (12-3 overall, 6-0 in the Pac-10) then scored six consecutive points. Turnovers on consecutive possessions led to layups by Trisha Stevens and Julie Zeilstra. Sonja Henning’s basket gave the Cardinal a 73-64 lead with 1:40 left.

Lisa Leslie had 24 points and 20 rebounds for USC (9-6, 3-2). Teammate Tammy Story had 21 points.

UCLA 102, California 82--Guard Rehema Stephens scored 34 points as the Bruins pulled away in the second half at Berkeley.

UCLA (8-7, 3-2), which shot 53% to Cal’s 35%, went on a 10-0 run to take a 74-64 lead. The Bears (10-6, 3-3) cut the deficit to 80-71 with 8:13 left before UCLA regained control.

No. 25 CS Long Beach 87, UC Santa Barbara 73--The 49ers, who have never lost to Santa Barbara, lead the series, 35-0, after coming from behind at Long Beach.

Long Beach (8-5, 3-1) trailed the Gauchos (10-4, 4-1) by three points with 10:04 left in the first half, but took control with a 23-6 run.
