Fireworks Device Goes Off at Pacific Bell Office
A telephone company office in Canoga Park got a scare Monday morning when a popping noise went off and a puff of smoke went up as an employee emptied a night depository box filled with customers’ bills.
The scare ended when a police bomb squad determined that the noise was made by a tiny “snap-pop” fireworks device that apparently was set off by friction as bills were moved, said Charlene Baldwin, spokeswoman for Pacific Bell.
The employee who was emptying the box called police and all five employees and 15 customers left the Winnetka Avenue office while the bomb squad investigated. Employees returned after 90 minutes. Police decided that it was the work of a vandal, Baldwin said.
