Controversy Over Menorah Display
Charles Kuralt got it right in choosing the Beverly Hills menorah/Christmas tree hassle as the day’s most absurd piece of news. It was the 1989 Supreme Court’s waffling decision, however, that caused the quarrel. If church and state are to be kept separate, two religious symbols make no more sense than one.
But there are other religions, other symbols. Let’s reduce the matter to further absurdity and invite all comers. I, myself, will reserve space for a tastefully decorated question mark.
