A GUIDE TO THE IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE by Patty Lurie (Bullfinch: $16.95)
A pleasant, well-organized series of plans for day trips from Paris to various sites painted by Impressionist artists. The juxtaposed paintings and contemporary photos reveal that some of these famous views have survived more or less intact. The church at Auvers-sur-Oise, right, still looks the way it did when Van Gogh painted it in 1890; anyone who’s seen Boudin’s “Cliffs at Etretat” will recognize the rocky promontory on the Channel coast. A painless way to add a little culture to next year’s trip to Europe.
