USD Soccer Player Nguyen Wins All-American Honors
Trong Nguyen, a senior sweeper on the USD soccer team, became the school’s first All-American in that sport when he was named to the second team on Wednesday.
Nguyen has won the team’s Most Valuable Player award three consecutive years (this year’s recipient has not been released). He has been named to the All-West Coast Conference team three times and this past year was named the conference’s defensive player of the year.
TENNIS
Both the men’s and women’s teams at USD made this week’s top 25. The men are tied with Irvine at No. 25, and the women are by themselves at No. 14.
Tonya Fuller (11) and Sakolwan Kacharoen (24) were ranked individually. On the men’s side, Jose Noriega was ranked 13th.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
USD got a career-high 21 points from sophomore Angie Straub and defeated UC Irvine, 80-50.
With 6:30 to go in the half and USD up, 23-21, the Toreros went on a run and outscored Irvine, 36-9, over the next 20 minutes.
USD limited Irvine to just 29% shooting from the field.
Other Toreros in double figures were: Christi English, 17; Lynda James, 10; and Chris Enger, 10. English also had 11 rebounds and Enger blocked six shots.
Both teams are now 2-4.
Lisa Beaver had 14 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, to lead UC San Diego past Hamline (Minn.) University, 74-51, in St. Paul.
Kathlene Alvarez added 13 points, Cari Young 12 for the Tritons (4-1). Mary Szaboda led Hamline (0-8) with 20 points.
