STATE : Gun in Donations Bag Kills Man
EL CAJON, Calif. — A Salvation Army volunteer died after being shot in the head when a fellow volunteer accidentally fired a pistol that had apparently been concealed in a bag of donated goods, officials said today.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said James I. Brower, 61, of Alpine, died after being flown to UC San Diego Medical Center and placed on life-support late Tuesday.
El Cajon police said Brower and two other volunteers were accepting donations at a Salvation Army trailer in a market parking lot Tuesday. One of the volunteers, Connie Wayne Overby, was carrying bags of donated items when he kicked a small handgun that had apparently fallen out of a bag.
Overby picked up the gun and was examining it when he pulled the trigger.
