ROUNDUP : Moorpark Wins at Cuesta, Moves to Tournament Title Game, 85-75

Westchester High graduates Damian Wilson and Sam Crawford scored 23 and 13 points to offset the 23 posted by their former prep teammate, Booker Waugh, in leading Moorpark College to an 85-75 victory over West Los Angeles on Friday in the Mid-State tournament at Cuesta.

Moorpark has won eight games in a row, one short of the school record, and the Raiders (10-1) will play tonight for their third tournament championship of the season.

Freshmen Jimmy Galbert (19 points) and Nate Hantgin (12) had career highs for Moorpark.

In other Mid-State tournament games:

Canyons 59, Cuesta 47--Nick Sanderson scored 14 points for Canyons and teammate Jason Harrison had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds in a consolation semifinal.

Although Canyons (4-4) made only 46.3% (19 of 41) of its field-goal attempts, Cuesta (2-8) was even worse, hitting only 14 of 47 for 29.8%.

In other men’s basketball games:

Antelope Valley 89, San Diego Mesa 86--J. R. Rider and LeVan Lide came off the bench to score 30 and 13 points for Antelope Valley in a Golden West tournament consolation semifinal game. Tony Madison added 18 for Antelope Valley (6-3).

Citrus 66, Glendale 63--Citrus came back from a five-point halftime deficit to knock Glendale out of the Golden West tournament.

Alfonso Pule led Glendale with 15 points.

San Francisco State 88, The Master’s 75--Erik Fisher had a game-high 34 points, making nine of 10 three-point attempts, to lead San Francisco State in a nonconference game at The Master’s. The Gators were 14 of 18 from three-point range.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pierce 58, Citrus 49--Lisa Little scored 19 points and Yolanda Davidian added 18 for Pierce in a nonconference game at Citrus. Leading, 41-38, midway through the second half, Pierce (6-2) went on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach and secure its third consecutive victory.

Moorpark 65, El Camino 61--Moorpark Coach Gary Abraham called the home nonconference game his team’s worst effort of the season, but it nonetheless extended the Raider win streak to 10, the longest in his five seasons at the school. Moorpark (10-1) was led by Kerrie Marshall with 23 points.

MEN’S WRESTLING

State tournament--Six Moorpark College wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament at Cypress College. The Raiders are in second place after the first day of competition. Moorpark has 34 1/2 points to trail Fresno City’s 36. Moorpark’s Billy Scannell (118 pounds), Delfino Ochoa (126), Robby Cook (142), Neal Mason (158), Phil Guerrero (177) and Tony Flores (190) finished the first day at 2-0.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Crespi 120, Calabasas 87--John Curtin scored 43 points and shattered the school record for three-point baskets with 11 in the nonleague win at Crespi. Rasaan Hall (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Robby Leff also scored in double figures for Crespi (3-1).

El Camino Real 74, Belmont 54--The Conquistadores jumped to a 26-6 lead at the end of the first quarter in the nonleague game at El Camino Real.

Marshall 60, San Fernando 59--San Fernando, which trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, fell one foot short in its comeback bid in a nonleague game at home.

With San Fernando trailing by three points, the Tigers’ Gerald Harris thought he had tied the score, but his long jump shot counted for only two points because he stepped on the three-point line.

Canoga Park 67, Sylmar 43--Canoga Park used full-court pressure defense to hold Sylmar to 14 points in the first half of the Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Lindsey Dunbar had 15 points, five steals and six assists for Canoga Park (3-4, 1-1).

Monroe 60, Birmingham 49--Monroe won for the fourth time this season, surpassing its victory total of last season. Stanley Deal scored 18 points for Monroe in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe (4-1, 1-1). Elmer Singh added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Newbury Park 63, Santa Ynez 47--Tim Lane scored a game-high 24 points and teammate Chris Falzone added 23 for Newbury Park (1-1) in a consolation semifinal of the Nordhoff tournament.

Faith Baptist 72, Camp Kilpatrick 66--Juniors Alex Estrada and Peter Rasmussen led a fourth-period charge as Faith Baptist (3-1) moved into today’s fifth-place Faith Baptist tournament game against Cathedral. Rasmussen scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds. Estrada led all scorers with 25 points.

Campbell Hall 61, St. Bonaventure 41--Campbell Hall advanced to the championship game of the Providence tournament at Woodbury College in Burbank.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Hart 65, North Hollywood 52--Guard Anjanette Dionne had 24 points and seven steals, and forward Carol Gruhlke added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Hart (4-0) in the semifinal game of the Alemany tournament. Jacinda Sweet scored a game-high 25 points for North Hollywood (3-2).

Reseda 60, Westchester 48--Reseda outscored visiting Westchester, 16-4, in the second quarter of the nonleague game. Nedra Chambers had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Reseda (2-2). Carolina Abrego had 10 and seven steals, Charon Walker had 14 and Nikki Blair had 12 and 10 rebounds.

BOYS’ WRESTLING

Harvard and Canoga Park each emerged with 4-0 records after the first day of the two-day Harvard Ten-Way tournament that features six Valley-area schools. Chaminade and Fillmore are 3-1, Granada Hills and the Harvard junior varsity are 2-2, and Faith Baptist is 0-4.
