A Hawaii-based Marine, who in August became the first to refuse deployment to the Middle East, has been transferred to Camp Pendleton to be processed for release from active duty, the Marine Corps announced Friday.

Jeffrey A. Paterson, a 22-year-old corporal, was granted an administrative discharge Wednesday. He had applied for conscientious-objector status. He was transferred Thursday to Camp Pendleton to begin at least three days of processing, said Staff Sgt. Vicki Turney, a Camp Pendleton spokeswoman.

Paterson will not be allowed interviews with the media until his processing is complete, Turney said.
