Appointment of Garcia to Police Commission OKd

The appointment of lawyer and lobbyist Daniel Garcia, a strong political ally of Mayor Tom Bradley, to the five-member Los Angeles Police Commission was approved Friday by the City Council.

Council members praised the 43-year-old Garcia’s qualifications in voting 11 to 0 to confirm him. Bradley appointed Garcia, former president of the city’s Planning Commission, in late October to succeed Commissioner Stephen Yslas, who resigned after 10 years of service.

At the time, Garcia’s appointment was seen by City Hall observers as an effort by the mayor to place a strong, pro-Bradley voice on the commission, which monitors the management of the department by Police Chief Daryl F. Gates.
