Vietnam Lays Off Half a Million Workers: Communist Vietnam, struggling to breathe life into an economy stifled by years of central planning, has laid off nearly half a million workers from state-run firms, official newspapers reported. Government firms, forced under new open-market laws to pay their own way, have found it impossible to sustain a work force inherited from decades of subsidized socialist rule. The army daily, Quan Doi Nhan Dan, said the government has retired 90,000 people on a pension and laid off 360,000 more over the past year.
