Sweetener Makers Face Dumping Duties: The European Community imposed the duties on U.S. and Japanese aspartame, an artificial sweetener. The EC Commission said America’s NutraSweet Co. charged half as much for its product in Europe as in the United States, causing “material injury†to Holland Sweetener Co., the EC’s only aspartame maker. It imposed a duty equal to $38 on each kilogram that NutraSweet imports into the 12-nation EC and $41.30 on aspartame from Japan’s Ajinomoto Co. The two companies jointly market aspartame in Europe.
