Brea-Olinda Scores 10 Points in Final 30 Seconds for Victory

BREA — Elvis is dead, and so is Corona del Mar High School’s chance for a third straight Division VI title.

Last week, Corona del Mar Coach Dave Holland said his team’s hopes for a three-peat were as good “as Elvis rising from the grave.”

Instead, it was host Brea-Olinda that came back from the brink Friday night, scoring 10 points in the last 30 seconds for a 24-17 victory over Corona del Mar in the first round of the Division VI playoffs.

Corona del Mar (5-5-1) took a 17-14 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard pass from Chad Woolsey to Jeff Wegener.

But Brea got the ball back with 5:49 left, drove 68 yards downfield, and tied the game on Marco Hernandez’s 24-yard field goal with 30 seconds left.

Brea plays Rancho Alamitos in the second round.

On the ensuing kickoff, Mark McLeran forced a fumble from Dave Olsen, and Brea’s Andy Hofacre recovered at the Corona del Mar 26-yard-line.

Two plays later, Brea quarterback Jason Luevanos froze the defense with a play-action fake and hit split end Gilbert Arriola from 16 yards out for the winning touchdown.

Corona del Mar took an early 10-0 lead on a 19-yard scoring pass from Woolsey to Olsen, and a 22-yard field goal by Tom Hess.

But Orange League champion Brea came back with a three-yard second-quarter touchdown pass from Luevanos to Matt Selinske, and a one-yard dive by Jamie Baraglia in the third quarter.
