SHORT TAKES : Cash Notes ‘Cultural Malaise’
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country singer Rosanne Cash says Americans suffer from a “cultural malaise†that values money over artistic creativity.
“We are becoming so heavily identified with that dollars-and-cents mentality that we are numbing ourselves to the better half of our nature,†Cash told a national panel evaluating music education in schools.
She was one of 17 music professionals, educators and students who addressed the panel from the National Commission on Music Education.
The panel will forward its recommendations about music education to Congress and President Bush next year.
