FIRST ACTION: Though sent to the Pacific during World War II, David Tallichet’s B-17 (E1) never saw combat until it starred in the movie “Memphis Belle.†. . . According to Tallichet, an Anaheim restaurateur, the plane was built at the Douglas plant in Long Beach in 1944 but never dropped a bomb in anger. It was probably used only to shuttle Gen. Curtis LeMay. . . . It ended its military career as a transport plane in Japan and eventually wound up in Tallichet’s collection.
