Mitchell’s strong piece unfortunately pivoted on this question: How much impact do film reviewers have on box office? A forlorn issue, because critics who pursue that goal are condemned to futility or fatuity.
As I can say from long experience, the abiding value of this line of work is that you enjoy writing, as well as you can, about an exciting though often disappointing medium. The reward is in the craft, and in drawing readers who thoughtfully share the pleasure. The rest is marginalia.
