Comfortable Red Car Ride Seems to Be Misnomer
- Share via
I read, with interest, your story “A Rerun for Red Cars?” (Oct. 19). I moved to Orange County from Whittier in 1932, and I traveled quite extensively throughout Orange County in the 1930s. But I was always on a motor transit bus.
I don’t ever remember seeing “thousands of people” riding through the Orange groves on the big Red Cars. I do remember seeing thousands of people riding through the orange groves on the Santa Fe trains as they transported people to the San Diego International Exposition (1935-36) and the Del Mar Race Track at about the same time.
I did take a trip on a Red Car once. To say that it was a comfortable ride is a misnomer. I found that ride to be about as comfortable as the Navy minesweeper I was assigned to in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.
