Here’s to Altruism and the Grove ‘Angel’
The article on the (anonymous) Grove Shakespeare Festival donor (“Grove Donor Says ‘Anger’ Spurred Gift†by Jan Herman, Calendar Oct. 23) moved me so much I had to respond.
First of all, (the donor) should feel very good about her donation. It is true altruism to give for the sole purpose of giving, and to support something you really believe in.
She is right, of course, that some people give to see their names in print or to get the nice little lunches, etc., but (her) assumption that all giving is for that reason is in error. I feel strongly that all people like to give according to their level of ability to give to things they believe in.
Since the Grove angel has the spirit of giving, it will always be in her mind to do it.
If she will get involved with some of the many charities in Orange County, she will grow in her appreciation of all the people, little and big, who do so much to make Orange County the vital place it is.
In conclusion, I would say to the Grove angel: We are all proud of you.
