Santa Monica : Textbooks Sent to Ethiopia
An organization of Ethiopians living in Los Angeles has begun shipping 100,000 surplus textbooks to schools in their homeland.
The books were collected from Southern California schools.
“Famine and 30 years of war continue to ravage Ethiopia,†said Bogaletch Gebre, a spokeswoman for Parents International Ethiopia, the Santa Monica-based organization sending the books.
Gebre said she hopes that the books will curtail the “book famine†that is chronic in Ethiopia and the rest of Africa. The books were donated by the Los Angeles and Santa Monica unified school districts, UCLA, and several area residents. The shipment is funded by the Illuminated Nations Operations Fund of the Tides Foundation. For information and to make donations, call (213) 453-5690.
