China’s senior leader Deng Xiaoping was quoted as making a bold statement on economic reform, an indication his authority remains paramount despite his formal retirement. Deng, 86, who relinquished his last post in April, was quoted by a senior official as calling for more rapid economic reforms and opening to the outside world, the official New China News Agency reported.
