The last time Pomona-Pitzer College defeated Occidental in football, disco music and flare jeans were still in favor.
The West Coast’s oldest intercollegiate rivalry was renewed Saturday night, and again Occidental prevailed, defeating Pomona, 38-11, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Occidental.
Occidental holds a 47-41-3 lead in the series, which began in 1895. Pomona has not beaten the Tigers since 1979.
Because Occidental (4-2, 2 1/2-0 in conference play) will meet Pomona-Pitzer (3-2, 2- 1/2) again later this season, the Tigers were credited with half a victory in the SCIAC standings.
Occidental, which benefited from five Sagehen turnovers, was led by running backs Craig Hartley and Brian Madlangbayan.
Hartley led all rushers with 132 yards in 22 carries and scored on runs of one and 13 yards. Madlangbayan gained 106 yards in 21 carries and had touchdown runs of 38 and 18 yards.
Occidental quarterback Derrick Williams completed just eight of 22 passes for 125 yards and tossed a 51-yard, third-period touchdown pass to tight end David Grossklaus that increased the Tigers’ lead to 24-3.
Occidental added two fourth-period touchdowns.
The Tigers kept Sagehen quarterback Scott Hamburg cooped up most of the first half, limiting him to seven completions in 15 passes for 102 yards. He had two passes intercepted.
