From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Nomadic Tuaregs wiped out an army detachment that had been stealing their cattle in the deserts of northern Mali and killed 30 soldiers, the Tilalt relief agency reported in Paris. Tilalt said that about 15 Tuareg warriors attacked the army base near Marat in northern Mali. Four Tuaregs were wounded, the statement said, and the invaders captured three soldiers. The Tuaregs are herdsmen who roam the deserts of Mali, Algeria, Libya and Niger, paying scant attention to national borders.
