Judge Won’t Delay Barry Sentencing for Cocaine Possession

WASHINGTON — A federal judge ruled Friday that sentencing of Washington Mayor Marion Barry for his cocaine possession conviction will take place Oct. 26, despite defense pleas for a delay.
Barry, one of the nation’s most controversial black politicians, sought to delay sentencing until after the Nov. 6 election. He is running for an at-large seat on the City Council.
Barry faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, although most first-time offenders are placed on probation.
