TWA Announces Layoffs: Money-losing Trans World Airlines laid off 24 newly hired pilots and canceled pilot training classes for new hires as part of a move to lower costs, according to TWA’s pilot union. The move follows last week’s dismissal of 430 office workers. The airline has said that as a result of higher fuel prices and softening traffic it may take other steps to lower expenses, such as dropping less-profitable routes.
