Veteran radio announcer Johnny Most, 67, whose gravelly voice became a legend to generations of Boston Celtic fans, has retired from the broadcast booth.

Most, who called the play by play for 37 seasons from “high above courtside� in Boston Garden, underwent a triple bypass operation last year and missed most of the 1989-90 season.

“It is only because of my health that I am forced to do this,� said Most, who joined the Celtics in 1952. “Unfortunately, I am no longer strong enough to do play by play or color.�
