Two Seed Companies Announce Merger
COON RAPIDS, Iowa — Garst Seed Co. is buying Super Crost Seeds of Kentland, Ind., for an undisclosed sum.
The merger will combine Garst’s major research network in the United States and Canada with Super Crost’s dealer organization in the southeast, east and northern Corn Belt and its proprietary breeding programs.
The combined company would have the capacity to condition more than 3 million units of seed a year. It also will have one of the largest research, production and distribution networks in the seed industry. The annual research and development budget will be $20 million, Garst said.
Super Crost, founded in 1936 by four sons of Edward J. Funk, markets a full line of seeds, including corn, sorghum, alfalfa and soybeans.
Garst is part of ICI Seeds, which markets seeds around the world.
