THE SIDELINES : Montreal Suspends Goalkeeper
MONTREAL — Goaltender Brian Hayward was suspended by the Montreal Canadiens today after walking out to press his demand for either more playing time or a trade.
Hayward did not show up for a morning skate for tonight’s home game against the Hartford Whalers. To replace Hayward, Montreal recalled Jean-Claude Bergeron from the Fredericton Canadiens of the American Hockey League.
Coach Pat Burns said he met with Hayward on Sunday and told him that Patrick Roy would start against Hartford and Hayward would start Friday against the New York Rangers.
Burns said Hayward told him that wasn’t good enough and left.
“No one is going to tell me when they will play,†Burns said.
Roy, who signed a four-year contract Tuesday worth more than $1 million per year, was expected to get the bulk of starting assignments this season.
