Mistrial Declared in Grand Theft Case of Ex-Officer

With jurors deadlocked 11 to 1 for guilt, a mistrial has been declared in the case of a former Compton police officer charged with grand theft for allegedly cashing the same paycheck twice, prosecutors said this week.
Henry Perez’s mistrial was declared by Superior Court Judge George Trammel earlier this week after three days of jury deliberations.
Prosecutors intend to retry Perez, 54. A new trial date will be selected at an Oct. 22 hearing.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Herb Lapin said Perez twice cashed his $1,200 paycheck on March 3, 1989. Perez testified that he was not guilty of the charge.
Lapin said that the one juror who voted for acquittal refused to explain her reasons for doing so.
