Family Messages Broadcast to Hostages

WASHINGTON — Voice of America on Wednesday began broadcasting taped messages from their families at home to Americans held hostage in Iraq and Kuwait.
Richard Boucher, State Department deputy spokesman, said the messages will be broadcast daily between 7 and 10 a.m. local time in a new segment called “Messages from Home.”
The program appears to be similar to one being aired by the British Broadcasting Corp.
“In noting this development, we’re forced to recognize that it’s actually a sad commentary on the Iraqi government that American families can only communicate with their loved ones through radio messages,” Boucher told reporters.
About 1,000 Americans are believed to still be in Iraq and Kuwait.
