PREP ROUNDUP : Cypress Girls Win Orange Volleyball Championship
Misty Hartung and Heather Lowe led Cypress High School to victory in the Orange girls’ volleyball tournament Saturday.
Cypress defeated Loara, 11-3, 4-11, 11-1, to win the title. Games were played to 11 points so the matches would not go too long.
Hartung and Lowe were named to the all-tournament team.
At the Bellarmine Jefferson Cross-country Invitational:
Orange Lutheran took second in Division IV girls’ race. Orange Lutheran was led by Amber Parkinson who finished sixth in 19 minutes 53 seconds over the 2.7-mile course through Griffith Park.
In the Magnolia water polo tournament:
Saddleback 7, Cerritos 6--Saddleback (12-4) rallied to take fourth place. Saddleback scored three goals to win: Dong Vu scored the winner with 1:46 left, Oscar Valenzuela tied the score with 2:24 remaining and John Phonn pulled the score within one (6-5) with 3:19 remaining for Saddleback (12-4) at Magnolia. In an earlier game, Saddleback defeated Los Amigos, 8-4.
Mater Dei 8, Bell Gardens 6--Mater Dei, which won the consolation final, was paced by Phil Mayer’s two goals at Cypress High School. In its semifinal, Mater Dei (7-7) defeated Rancho Alamitos, 15-7. Mayer had five goals to lead Mater Dei in that game.
