Cape Verde has joined the pro-democracy trend sweeping Africa by scrapping one-party rule, which had been in force since independence from Portugal in 1975. The National People’s Assembly of the island republic off the coast of West Africa took the decision Friday, said state radio monitored here.

Deputies abolished the monopoly of the ruling African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde and called presidential elections for January next year. Parliamentary elections will be held one month later.
