West Torrance 38, Morningside 18--Running back Alex Schultz rushed for 164 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Warriors to an impressive non-league victory at West.
Schultz, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior, scored on runs of one, 46 and 42 yards as West improved to 3-1. He also intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. One play after his interception, Schultz scored on a 46-yard run to give the Warriors a 17-0 lead with 3:53 left in the first half.
Schultz’s 42-yard scoring run early in the third quarter made it 24-6.
Morningside (2-2) was handicapped defensively after All-CIF linebacker Danny Katoa was ejected for a flagrant foul early in the second quarter.
West, which had great success running between the tackles, took leads of 31-6 and 38-12 in the second half. Steve Nishida scored on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Steve Sarkisian late in the third quarter and Ralph Alarcon scored on a four-yard run on fourth-and-goal with 2:32 left to play.
