DEXTER A. HENDERSON of Ladera Heights has two children in Parent Elementary School in Inglewood. He commented on the quality of education at local schools:

I think (the school is) doing a relatively good job, and I think that’s because there’s a lot of parental involvement in the school. And the school has been able to recruit a group of teachers who are very dedicated and committed to the children.

We as a community have to do a better job of supporting education by putting dollars where our mouths are. We say we want a quality education and yet we support legislators, and I’m really talking about the governor in this particular instance, who at every opportunity cuts money from supporting education.

There’s just insufficient dollars being put into the supports that are necessary to keep a school thriving and nurturing. I’m talking about supporting teachers both in terms of salaries and having sufficient teachers’ aides in the classroom. It’s crazy to expect one teacher to adequately provide the kind of educational experience that all our kids need today when you have a classroom of 30 kids. You just can’t do that.
