Contaminated Soil Removed in Arcadia

ARCADIA — kers this week started hauling contaminated soil away from a site the city Redevelopment Agency bought from a national construction company four years ago.
More than 500 tons of soil contaminated with lead, oil waste and asbestos have been excavated and stockpiled, said Peter P. Kinnahan, assistant city manager for economic development. The removal is to be completed next week.
The Redevelopment Agency, made up of City Council members, last week voted 4 to 0 to remove the contaminated soil immediately without going through the normal bidding process. Councilman Robert C. Harbicht was absent.
In May, a federal judge ordered Kiewit Pacific Co. to pay the agency for removal of contaminated soil at the firm’s former branch, 301 E. Santa Clara St. The estimated cost of hauling the soil to a landfill is $110,000.
