Jack William Morgan; Retired Teacher

Jack William Morgan, a retired elementary school teacher in the San Fernando Valley, has died at his Van Nuys home. He was 69.

Morgan died Thursday of a heart attack, said his wife, Rose Morgan.

Born Dec. 10, 1920, in Youngstown, Ohio, Morgan served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, playing the piano in a band called “The Winged Pigeons,” which entertained troops in the Pacific. Morgan later attended San Fernando Valley State College, the predecessor of Cal State Northridge, receiving a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in administration.

He taught second through sixth grades at the former Eaton Street School in Canoga Park, Calvert Street School in Woodland Hills, Tulsa Street School in Granada Hills, the former Collins Street School in Woodland Hills and San Jose Street School in Mission Hills. He retired in 1988 after 34 years with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Morgan is survived by his wife of 42 years; a son, Cody William Morgan of North Hollywood; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today at Grace Community Church of the Valley, 13248 Roscoe Blvd. in Sun Valley. Private burial will be at Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood. Utter McKinley Mortuary in Mission Hills is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Morgan’s name to the children’s department of the camp scholarship fund at Grace Community Church of the Valley.
